ThermoView Ti30 Infrared Thermal Imager

The fully-radiometric, high performance Raytek ThermoView™ Ti30 thermal imager is providing safety for linemen as well as saving money for Wood County Electric Coop, according to Chief Operating Officer Robert Norman.

Wood County Electric Coop in Quitman, TX purchased a Thermoview Ti30 after discovering that some of its lightening arresters were failing prematurely. Lightening arresters monitor the amount of voltage in a power line. If the voltage is higher than 7,200 volts, it will short circuit the system and divert a lightening strike from the equipment into the ground. But, if the arrester fails to detect the high voltage, there could be serious consequences.

“This is a safety issue for the service person working on or around the equipment,” Norman said. "When the arresters fail unexpectedly, there is the potential for a catastrophic failure and portions of porcelain could spray."

To ensure safety, Norman’s crew is surveying several thousand arresters, and halfway through the project about 7 percent have been found to be 15 to 20 degrees above ambient temperature, making them suspect for failure.

Designed for predictive maintenance applications, the ThermoView Ti30 thermal imager scans targets quickly and smoothly, includes software for analysis and reporting, and comes with all the accessories needed to get the imager up and running quickly. A two-day imaging training session is also included.

“We always knew that we could also use thermal imaging for other maintenance,” he said. “Now when there’s an arrester near a transformer, we’re doing both at the same time and have been able to avoid future problems.”

Shaft Alignment Training Course

Mr. Shims Shaft Alignment Training Course comes to your facility and train up to ten students per session. Mr. Shims brings in the necessary material, (training stands, manuals, alignment hardware), for this hands on class. All we need is a room, white board and overhead.

We start off the class training on the basics, Straight Edge, Feeler Gauge and Dial Indicator (Graphing). During this you will find out the importance of flat bases, pipe strain and other sources effecting the alignment.

To teach alignment we use the Indicator Reverse Method, the best way to learn what exactly is going on with the machine and motor.

Once the person finds out what is going on in Alignment we can bring out any other tools for alignment you want i.e. Lasers, and this becomes just a different though very accurate tool for alignment.

Principals first then personnel know how their alignment tools work and what exactly they are doing. Once they learn this then these tools become diagnostic when using.

Our instructor Dan Munday has been doing alignment work for 22 years and has been training companies in shaft alignment, straightness, flatness, spindle, parallel and roll alignment since 1985.

When was the last time your personnel were able to sit down, learn and do alignment in a relaxed atmosphere? Want to go in the field for part of the lesson? No problem.

We can train in all aspects of alignment with any equipment you have or plan on getting.

Oil Purification – K.I.S.S. Principle

Oil purification does not have to be complicated or difficult. In fact, it can be very simple! There is an oil purifier on the market today that offers simple on/off operation and only requires one utility…power. This purifier can remove water, gases/hydrocarbons, and particulate, bringing your oil back to “like” new condition without impacting the oils properties or additives and significantly improving machinery reliability and MTBF.

Water Removal
Water is reported by many industries as the #1 contaminate found in oil systems…and it can be the most difficult to remove. Free water can be removed by most of the older technologies such as centrifuges and coalescers; however, to get the dissolved water out and stop the rust, corrosion and additive depletion you must use a technology that can remove all forms of water to very dry levels. Zero water = Maintenance Savings!!

Degasification
Seal oil leakage and the continuing problem of sour oil disposal can be a maintenance nightmare. Improved seal designs are the solution to this challenge however, until that machine comes down at turnaround…an oil purifier that can degas can save you major dollars by eliminating new oil purchases, sour oil disposal, and your employee’s handling this hazardous gas ladened oil. Keep the oil in the tank and send the gases to the flare…it’s that simple!

New Grease Meter

Assalub AB, which in 1997 launched the world’s first grease meter with a digital display for outflow quantity, is now presenting the next generation of this valuable maintenance tool.

The new meter uses a measurement principle based on an oval gearwheel, thus reducing the weight and dimensions for a very easy to handle and robust design packed with new and useful features.

• Weighing just 350 g, the meter can easily be fitted to all normal hand pumps and valve handles for grease lubrication.
• The outflow quantity can be displayed either in g (gram), cm³, oz (ounces) or fl.oz (fluid ounces) on the four-figure display.
• The display has clear 9 mm high figures that can be background lit in dark environments.
• The meter has a total counter in tons.
• Maximum working pressure is 700 bar.

The new grease meter provides the lubricator with a handy tool to be able to lubricate each bearing simply and correctly as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. In practice, this soon results in a reduction of 30 – 50% in grease consumption at the same time as the machines get cleaner and the environment improves.

By avoiding over- and underlubrication, the service life of the bearing is extended and the costs of bearing replacement and maintenance are reduced. Fewer unplanned operational stoppages also mean increased productivity.

Since the grease meter was first used at the Domsjö pulp mill in Örnsköldsvik in 1997, grease consumption has fallen from 15 tons/year to 4 tons/year. Today, only synthetic grease is used and the lubrication intervals have been doubled. This leads not just to lower lubrication costs and an improved working environment, but also to the time spent on lubrication being reduced by half.

However, thanks to consistent use of the grease meter for all hand grease the most important result is that the service life of the bearings has increased, leading to greater productivity.

Assalub’s grease meter is the tool for the quality-conscious lubricator of today and the future.
