Ultrasound & Infrared Team Up to Prevent Transformer Outages

Uptime Feb/March 2008
The Dynamic Duo
by Allan Rienstra

Processing steel requires big energy and heavy duty electrical systems. But just one electrical component failure can grind steel production to a halt, costing manufacturers huge losses in time and money. The more severe the failure, the longer it takes for systems to be restored. Maintenance crews rely on condition monitoring technologies like ultrasound inspection and infrared imaging to predict electrical component failures in all systems including substations, MCC gear, transformers, and the like. More…

Sponsor Case Study: ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Increases Asset Availability with Ivara EXP

“We realized that operating our equipment 24/7 was not sustainable,” states Dane Smith, Shelby Plant Manager, ArcelorMittal Tubular Products. “With some aging equipment and minor failures beginning to occur, we could not risk losing a customer due to a catastrophic equipment failure. Our choice was to either add more equipment or simply get more out of what we have.” More…

Develop, Implement and Measure

Uptime® Magazine Feb/Mar 2008
Raising an Asset Performance Management Program by John Mitchell, Meridium

Having worked in the industry for more decades than anyone would want to admit, it is now amusing to observe first-hand a fast-moving, high-technology company that has an abundance of younger people just entering their parenting years. For an individual like me who has been through “the program” with both children and grandchildren, the enthusiasm and innocence I see in these new parents is often quite humorous.

Drawing a parallel between developmental milestones and reliability improvements, one engineer integrated his child’s sonogram into a presentation – but totally neglected the crucial KPIs: sleeping through the night and potty training!

Parenting is clearly a top down activity – left to themselves the little darlings would eat sugary cereal, watch too much TV, leave their junk around, go to bed late, and never, ever help with the routine chores. Standards of behavior and household chores must be established by an authority – mom and dad!

An asset performance management (APM) program shares many of the same characteristics with parenting.

All Cracked Up - Examining the Vibrational Effects of a Cracked Shaft

Uptime® Magazine Feb/Mar 2008
by Dr. Zhuang Li & Dr. Suri Ganeriwala

A shaft crack is one of the most common defects in a rotor system and early detection of this failure mode is a very serious matter. In this study, shaft cracks were simulated and analyzed using SpectraQuest’s rotor Machinery Fault Simulator (MFS). A series of experiments were conducted to observe the behavioral changes of the cracked shaft in critical speed, 1X and 2X frequency responses. The experimental results were found to be consistent with the theoretical prediction of the shaft crack.
