KPIs and Asset Strategy Management
An effective set of interlocking performance indicators provides feedback to individuals, groups, and the enterprise, directing the behavior of all. Selecting the right KPIs is vital for operational effectiveness. Even more importantly, the metrics must be built into a performance measurement system that allows individuals and groups to understand how their behaviors and activities are fulfilling the overall corporate goals.

Fighting the Maintenance Crisis Through Song-- Operatic Version Released
To further spread the message to the world to work against the Maintenance Crisis, Joel Leonard enlisted David Holley, Director of Opera at the famed University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Music School to record an operatic version.
Leonard, also known as the Maintenance Evangelist, wrote the original version in October of 2002 after attending an Engineering Conference in Nashville, Tenn. After hearing hundreds of Facilities Engineering executives from major corporations complain the lack of interest by future generations to enter this career and witnessing first hand thousands of candidates brave 30 degree weather conditions to stand in line to earn a slot on American Idol, Leonard wrote the lyrics for “The Maintenance Crisis Song.”
Leonard said, “With the pending retirements of the baby boomer generation, the lack of interest by future generations, the aging of the current equipment which requires more maintenance, and the increasing sophistication of new technology, there is truly a perfect maintenance storm brewing.”
Leonard has recruited bands to re-record the song in various musical genres in order to attract more awareness to this issue. Current versions include the original garage band version, a blues, funk, hip hop and now an Operatic version entitled, “It’s a Serious Crisis: The Fat Lady is Warming Up!”
David Holley, who has sung in numerous opera companies in the US and Canada, lent his vocal cords to the project because he believes that many in our society do not appreciate the importance of maintenance. To make sure more attention is generated on this issue, Leonard plans to pursue a Grammy award with the release of a collection of maintenance crisis songs in various genres on the album entitled “Pipe Dreaming: Fix it or they will leave” early next year.

HotShot - Infrared Camera for Predictive Maintenance
HotShot is a totally new concept in infrared cameras featuring our unique rotating infrared camera eyeball and data logger design. HotShot’s design began with a simple question. What do thermographers do while out in the field? The answer, they collect information.
Unlike point and shoot cameras HotShot is designed to capture all relevant information like equipment name, diagnosis, repair recommendation and automatically generate reports without having to struggle with field notes or transposing voice notes.
Once you see, hold and operate HotShot you’ll immediately “get it” and no other camera will do. Is HotShot the best infrared camera on the market today? Visit our web site for an online demo and find out.

The Failure Dilemma!
How do I move towards Proaction when I work in such a Reactive environment?
written by Robert J. Latino, Reliability Center, Inc.
Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) coupled with Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) covers all the bases in moving towards total Failure Avoidance. RCM may be necessary to gain control of an operation, however it is time consuming and expensive up front. RCM’s returns are not realized quickly.
RCFA is real time. It deals with today’s problems and eliminates them from being tomorrow’s problems. Bottom-line results can be immediate if recommendations are acted on quickly. RCFA can be proactive when accepted chronic failures that comprise the maintenance budget are eliminated from recurring. More…
