Evaluating CMMS Software
by Terrence O’Hanlon CMRP
Traditional methods for sourcing maintenance software can be confusing, expensive, time consuming, and incomplete. At last count there were more than 400 CMMS and EAM software publishers and dozens of independent Web-hosted solutions. That is a lot of software to choose from. More…

Shoestring Supervisors
by Robert Apelgren, Reliability Engineer
Have you ever watched a child who has to stop everything every few feet to tie their shoes? You start to wonder why they do not double knot the laces to prevent them from coming untied. The same thing can be seen in “Corporate America”. The same thing happens with everyday operations at various levels in any organization. I would like to concentrate on supervisors though due to the direct input they have to quality, productivity, and training. The three areas that I would like to discuss are the past (overcoming), present (reaction), and future (planning). In addition, recommendations will be made on how to improve this process. More…

Breathers as a Best Practice
An iPresentation Tutorial by Brian Gleason, Des-Case
Effectively controlling, or eliminating, contamination will have a significant impact on the reliability of lubricants and machinery. This 28 minute iPresentation Tutorial explores recent advances in breather technology and provide guidance on successful use and application of the various breather types. The tutorial also addresses how major cost savings can be achieved by controlling contamination ingress. Total cost of ownership can be greatly reduced through proper lubrication maintenance which involves the use of contamination control breathers as a ‘best practice.’ This tutorial requires a media player for narration playback.

Using Quantitative Spectrophotometric Analysis as a Predictive Tool To Measure Varnish Potential
By Brian Thompson, Analysts, Inc. and Greg Livingstone, Clarus Technologies
Editors Note: We were lucky to have this exciting new technology introduced for the first time anywhere at IMC-2004 and now we are happy to share it with all of our readers - TOH
Varnish is a widespread problem in many hydraulic and sensitive lubrication applications. All mineral base lubricants have the potential to generate varnish deposits. Routine oil analysis does not measure this potential. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Quantitative Spectrophotometric Analysis (QSA) as an effective tool for measuring the varnishing potential of lubricating fluids. This new predictive tool will enhance an existing oil analysis program by alerting the user to dangerous fluid and system conditions that would otherwise go undetected. More…
