October 02, 2005   Grease Goobers

From: This just drives me CRAZY by Manfred Smith

Here’s a pet peeve and I see it a lot. You’re on a routine plant walk through, taking notes, and talking to folks. You stop next to a significant piece of rotating equipment (fill in the blank with your equipment). You look at the gear drive and BAM! There it is a GREASE GOOBER. Now let me explain. A grease goober is simply that glob of grease at the end of a grease fitting that was not removed or cleaned after the last application. You look around and you find they’re all over the place. Now why is this bad? Simple, grease has a wonderful affinity for attracting all kinds of (airborne) contaminants. The next time a grease gun is applied to the fitting, you’ll find that you’re forcing undesirable contaminants into the bearings. Proper practice dictates that both the zirk and grease gun fitting are cleaned with a clean rag before pumping new grease into the fitting. It’s a simple thing that only takes a little bit of discipline and probably some training. Now think about how much damage this practice, normally a positive one, can cause if not executed properly. The term “maintenance induced failure” comes to mind. On a broader level, ask yourself if this practice is simply the tip of the iceberg. If the mechanics don’t take the time to properly complete a simple maintenance intervention such as greasing a zirk, how well do you think they complete more involved tasks?

Each country has their own needs, but the entire world needs oil and lubricants to allow machinery, cars and industry to stay active. Let’s take a closer look at an emerging North American alternative.
