February 23, 2007   What is an Arc Flash?

Think of an arc flash as a short circuit through the air. In an arc flash incident, an enormous amount of concentrated radiant energy explodes out wards from the electrical equipment (see video on our web site), creating pressure waves that can damage a persons hearing, a high-intensity flash that can damage their eyesight and a superheated ball of gas that can severely burn a workers body and melt metal. The pressure waves can also send loose material like pieces of damaged equipment, tools and other objects flying through the air.

Arc flash is a serious hazard that can be devastating to those exposed to it.

February 23, 2007   Versatile Mikron ViewPorts Allow Ultrasound Inspection

Mikron ViewPorts for thermal inspection allow safer ultrasound inspection, too. Not only can electrical cabinets be thermally inspected with doors closed, ultrasonic detection of corona is safer and more convenient with ViewPorts too! Quite simply, rather than opening the cabinet, or listening around the seams, the ViewPort cover is removed and ultrasonic probe inserted for more accurate corona detection.

In addition, Mikron’s ViewPorts are virtually maintenance-free. They reduce arc flash risk by allowing closed-door cabinet inspection, and accurate thermal readings, unlike IR windows. Finally, the economical Mikron SpyGlass™ Lens and ViewPort inspection combination is the best way to stretch your thermal inspection budget!
