October 27, 2006   See It Both Ways with IR-Fusion Technology

IR-Fusion Technology, only from Fluke Corporation, captures a visible light image and an infrared image together in one image to take the mystery out of IR image analysis. And, for a limited time you can get it FREE.

To communicate critical information, infrared images only are no longer enough. With IR-Fusion technology, one can better identify details, manage and analyze images by combining both the infrared and visible light images. IR-Fusion technology simultaneously captures pixel-for-pixel infrared and visible light images. With the integrated laser pointer visible on the images, precise and accurate (faulty) component identification is very easy.

5 viewing modes
Full IR – For troubleshooting and analyzing equipment and installations with very high resolution IR imaging.
Picture-in-Picture – For creating an IR ‘window’ surrounded by a visible light frame to easily identify thermal anomalies, while maintaining a frame of reference with surroundings (shown).

Alpha Blending – For combining visible and infrared images together in any ratio to create a single image with enhanced detail helping to precisely locate problems.

IR/Visible Alarm – For displaying only temperatures that fall above, below, or in between a specified range as IR image.

Full Visible Light – A bright, detailed pixel-for-pixel reference image of subject areas for documentation and reporting.

Find out how to get IR-Fusion free with a Fusion thermal camera purchase, call 1-800-760-4523 (US only). (Offer expires December 20, 2006).

October 27, 2006   Why use Mikron ViewPorts for thermal inspection of electrical switchgear?

It’s simple:

1. They are maintenance-free. While fragile IR windows can break due to regular factory motion, Mikron ViewPorts withstand the Mikron SpyGlass Lens being pressed against the ViewPort. The IR windows can also fog up, attract dirt and oils, absorb moisture, and scratch or crack. The Mikron ViewPort is a covered, lockable .5” aperture, which maintains the integrity of the cabinet.

2. NFPA 70E safety compliance has never been easier. You can forget the hot and uncomfortable “NASA Suit” Personal Protection Equipment—Mikron’s ViewPorts allow you to inspect without opening cabinet doors, greatly reducing arc flash risk.

3. Mikron ViewPorts allow more accurate thermal readings. Metal screen barriers can easily skew thermal readings. The crystalline material that makes up IR windows transmit IR energy in the range of .13-10 microns, while most cameras “see” best in the 8-14 micron range. With the IR windows cutting off at 10 microns, the camera misses more than 70% of the target’s energy.

4. The ViewPorts are the best way to stretch your thermal inspection budget. At around $50 each, you can buy six ViewPorts for the price of one IR window. Do the math, and you’ll see that for the price of 200 IR windows, you can buy a new Mikron camera with visual and IR imaging capabilities, a SpyGlass Lens, and 200 ViewPorts!

5. ViewPorts = simple and fast. One employee can install a ViewPort in 20 minutes. With cabinet doors closed, inspections are simpler and easier, encouraging more frequent inspections.

October 20, 2006   This is iT!!

Wilcoxon’s own relay alarm for vibration transmitters and loop powered sensors, the iT401, is a DIN-rail mountable alarm module with three programmable relays for use in Condition Based Monitoring or Process Control systems. The iT Alarm is a breakthrough product, with more comprehensive features and capabilities than any similar product.

HOT features include:

• Three programmable relays – high and low setpoints, and a BOV monitor of sensor or cable connection malfunctions

• 4–20 mA signals accepted from the iT Transmitter or any loop powered sensor, including Wilcoxon’s popular LPS™ Series

• PLC or DCS network compatible

• Precise programming of 1%-accurate high and low alarm setpoints

• User-programmable delay timers and hysteresis levels.

• Power relays with the capacity to switch 250VAC, 8A-resistive or 1/3HP inductive machines, eliminating the need to link up with a PLC or DCS.

The iT Alarm is ideal for systems that utilize vibration monitoring of fans, motors, pumps, blowers, compressors, chillers, gearboxes, and mixers. Because the iT Alarm can be used with any 4-20 mA signal input, its uses extend beyond CBM vibration applications to Process Control monitoring of vibration, temperature, pressure, level, flow, force, and speed.

October 20, 2006   Infrared Windows = Safe Inspections

National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) specification NFPA 70E establishes guidelines for safe work practices around live electrical components. This is changing how thermographers can conduct thermal inspections of low, medium and high voltage electrical equipment.

Infrared Windows help thermographers comply with NFPA 70E by allowing them to scan the electrical equipment without opening or removing covers of electrical enclosures.

Scanning without opening enclosures greatly reduces the risk of Arc Flash, it makes inspection faster, and takes away many of the triggers of an arc flash.
