June 24, 2005 xmLABOR™, Labor Time Entry
Accurately track all maintenance labor time!
Used with your MicroMain XM™ CMMS (computerized maintenance management system), xmLABOR allows you to track not only labor time related to work orders, but also time spent on administrative tasks and break times. You can track the type of hours—including overtime, vacation or jury duty—as well.
With all hours accounted for in a day or a week, you can evaluate time spent on specific tasks and make better decisions regarding labor resources.
xmLABOR also allows you to secure transaction approvals before staff and contract labor submit their timesheets. These approvals can be used for compliance regulations, such as those required by the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA).
In addition to tracking time, you can use this software module to add parts, labor, or other costs to work orders. You can also easily generate labor-related reports, including time spent on work orders, administrative tasks, or other activities.
Affordable and easy to use, xmLABOR gives you complete control of labor time and helps simplify your labor management.

June 17, 2005 Fluke Ti30™: Using Thermography to Make your PdM Program Pay Dividends
Part 3 of 4: Maximizing Your Return
In past issues, we discussed using the Fluke Ti30 thermal imager as part of a predictive maintenance (PdM) program, and analyzing the investment.
Once you have analyzed your program investment, consider how the program will save money. These typically include:
• reduced unnecessary preventive maintenance activities
• improved maintenance efficiency and reduced unplanned downtime
• reduced capital equipment expenditures due to increased life expectancy of capital equipment
• reduced or eliminated expenses for periodic thermographic inspections by outside consultants
• improved production efficiency and quality
To maximize return, spend time up front to lay out your thermal imaging inspection routes and frequency. These enable you to identify failure before it happens, and not spend time or money on unneeded maintenance that is based on time instead of performance. Your thermal imager will likely also be used as a troubleshooting tool, which can save yet more money by identifying imminent failure.
The Fluke Ti30 thermal imager is designed to deliver maximum return on that investment with full support for inspection routing in the camera and software. One upfront cost ($9,995 in US) includes the imager, all needed accessories, unlimited-license analysis and reporting software, and a professional two-day training class.

June 17, 2005 Benchmate: The Simpler CMMS
Benchmate is a simpler CMMS for small to medium size organizations. Technicians find Benchmate easy to learn and use. You will not spend a fortune on training your CMMS specialist only to lose it when he leaves.
We offer reasonably priced configurations serving single users, multi-user networks, and multiple locations. Internet access is provided using Windows 2000/2003 Terminal Servers or Citrix Servers.
One of the major problems in using a comprehensive maintenance software package is learning where the information you need is located.
Benchmate uses just 7 major screens - each corresponding to a portion of your work practice. Data entered in one screen is automatically available to other related screens.
The screens are:
• Equipment - Identifies and describes each equipment, its spare parts and maintenance history.
• Service Log - Records maintenance activity for each equipment. Shows failure code (for root cause analysis), down time, who worked, parts used and comments.
• Preventive Maintenance - Describes and schedules periodic maintenance jobs. Includes tasks and parts needed.
• Work Order - Describes and schedules planned (non-PM) maintenance activity. Contains tasks and parts needed.
• Trouble Call - Tracks and schedules user requests for maintenance.
• Spare Parts - Describes each spare part, the equipment it is used on and, with the Advanced Inventory and Purchasing Module, the vendors and their part number.
• Vendors - Lists vendors and other contacts

June 17, 2005 Computer Based Training: Electrical Safe Work Practices
New Standard Institute’s Electrical Safe Work Practices program features animations, interactive exercises, narration, enlargeable graphics, pop-up definitions, word search, and a quiz. Available as an instantly downloadable file or on CD.
All persons who install, maintain, repair, or just work near electrical power equipment need electrical safety training. United States labor law spells out safe work practices and employee training requirements. This computer based training provides the information required by OSHA 29CFR1910 Subpart S, as well as other important safety information not required by OSHA. This training focuses on:
• US OSHA Law and NFPA
• Effects of Electric Shock
• Lock-out and Tag-out Procedures (1910.147)
• Safe Work Practices
• Safe Use of Equipment
Training that works ... for people who work.

June 17, 2005 The Truth About Maximizing Your Inventory ROI
Most approaches to inventory management focus on a risk/return formula where the inventory investment is based solely on the risk of significant loss from failure. This limits the true opportunity to fully optimize your inventory because it ignores some of the other inventory management actions that can be taken.
The truth is, that in addition to this formula, there are many more actions that can be taken that will have a significant and positive impact on your inventory. In fact there are seven.
To fully optimize your inventory and get the greatest return on investment (ROI) you need to use these seven actions to optimize the system that manages the inventory not just the inventory itself.
World’s best practice requires the adoption of a zero inventory mindset and a systematic approach, not just the application of the old risk/return formula. Following this you can then apply the ‘7 Actions for Inventory Reduction’ and maximise your ROI.
Finally, it is by changing your practices that lasting results are achieved.
